Visitor stats for your Open Decks

The Open Deck settings screen now contains charts and counts for your visitors to your project. We also show you the top referrers so you know how people are finding you.
To keep track of your progress, we’ll be sending a weekly digest every Monday to give you a visitor overview of the passed week. Feel free to opt out in the Open Deck settings.

Discord Integration Updates

  • You’re now able to mark community suggestions with a reaction (e.g. 🚫). This will mark the underlying message as removed. I.e. this message won’t create a card when upvoted or if already upvoted beyond the threshold, it will auto-archive the card. It also prevent this message from showing up in leaderboards.
  • We overhauled the UI so it doesn’t get too overwhelming when you’ve connected multiple servers or set up a lot of commands.
  • added [CARDPUBLICURL] shortcode for better integration with Open Decks.

    More improvement and fixes

  • Conversations: We added more states to the conversation icons on mini cards: when there’s a conversation with an undismissed conversation, the bubble will be green. If there’s a snoozing conversation, the bubble will get a snooze-colored (a.k.a. purple) border.
  • Text editor: Fix issue when hitting enter wouldn’t scroll to the very bottom of the editor
  • User settings: Added an option to disable showing animated gifs.
  • Drag and Drop: You can now drag cards to the milestone tab in the header to assign them to a milestone.
  • Drag and Drop: Fix drag and dropping files on Firefox.
  • Time tracking Report: Adding the deck of a card to the report and csv.
  • …and several further smaller fixes
v2.46

Open Decks Portal

We’ve released the first version of the Open Decks Portal! It’s a place that highlights the most active and popular projects.
At the moment there are two categories: Staff picks which allows the Codecks team to promote noteworthy and inspirational projects (we’ll populate it soon!). The next category is the Most active open decks one. It’s based on project’s activity of the last 7 days and the card count. We’ll also add a Most popular section once we have the required data.

You can find it under this url: open.codecks.io

If you would like to show up on any of the lists, check your project settings and make sure you’ve agreed to appear there. You’re also able to upload a nice 16:9 promo image for a good first impression of your project.

Further Improvements & Fixes

  • Open Decks: Improve look of conversations.
  • Open Decks: We’ve started counting visits. No worries, we’re not using any third party trackers here. We’re not even storing any cookies or IPs so your visitors can feel safe :)
We’ll soon provide you with the visitor stats as well. That way you’ll be able to follow your progress.
  • Deck Inspector: URLs for decks now contain the deck’s title, old URLs will redirect to the updated one.
  • Organization Settings: allow to disable auto-archiving of cards.
  • Hero Cards: wherever a sub card is referenced (be it using the $ command or in the Slack or Discord integration), we’ve added the title of its Hero card.
  • Time Tracking: Add option in user profile section to allow showing card id in the tracker widget.
  • Time Tracking: Fix issue with duplicate timing counter in browser tab title.
  • Slack Integration: We’ve inverted the checkboxes in the notification types field from “disable these types” to “enable these types” to prevent a common misunderstanding.
  • Discord Integration: When a card or comment is created with an image, this image will be embedded directly into the card or comment.
  • Discord Integration: Notifications for cards with cover image will show the image in the embed.
v2.45

Billing update

There are rumors that accountants have feelings too. So we dedicated some time, willing to put a smile on their faces.

  • We’ll now always generate an invoice when your billing cycle ends, even though your balance covers all of it.
  • In July Germany reduced their VAT from 19% to 16% and will go back to 19% in January 2021 (presumably). So if you topped up before July, you’ve basically paid too much VAT and we’ll add the difference to your balance. The opposite will happen should you top up now with VAT rates increasing in the future.

Further Improvements & Fixes

  • Fix blurry font on cards on Chrome 86
  • No more dancing tooltips when you’re mouse hovers the wrong pixel
  • No more crash when you’re trying to upload a file which is larger than your plans limit (10MB for free accounts, 25MB for the Pro plan)
  • No more crash when you’re logging out
  • You can revoke access from the GitHub integration, allowing to access it with a different user
v2.44

Go to Card or Deck

We expanded the search functionality. In addition to filtering, you can now jump directly to a deck or card by entering its name.
For an even quicker way to get to your target, you can use the prefix gc: or gd: in the search bar to only show deck or card results. You can use gac: and gad: to go to any card or deck independent of your project visibility.

More improvements and fixes

  • Calendar: UX improvements as well boosting performance by only rendering months visible on the screen.
  • Deck selector: Add a toggle to allow picking from hidden projects.
  • Milestones: Allow to disable milestone feature in the organization settings.
  • Milestone picker: Cards without decks show milestones based on project selection.
  • Search: you may search for hero or sub card types by either entering hero or sub.
  • Discord Integration: Allow to pick more than one week day for posting leaderboards.
  • Source Control Integrations: Improved message formatting, allow to reference more than a single card in a commit message.
  • Swim lanes: Fix a crash when dropping a card into the “No milestone” swim lane.
v2.43
12 Oct, 2020

Multi-project milestones

Rather than limiting you to pick between global milestones or assigning it to a single project, you can now pick as many or few projects you like. For larger teams that will make it a lot easier to focus only on tasks that are relevant to them.

You’re now also able to re-assign the projects (or make it global) after you’ve created a milestone.

More improvements and fixes

  • Text Formatting: Support for contents using right-to-left writing systems like Arabic.
  • File Uploads: Dropping files now should work more reliably.
  • Open Decks: All globe icons referencing the open deck feature are now clickable and open the resource in the open decks (or in case of the card header, it copies the public URL of this card)
  • Mission Control: The button that allows you to pick a single project now selects all projects if you click it again
  • Project Tags: Improved icon for color picker.
  • Conversations: Observers can now be selected as conversation participants again.
  • Discord Integration: Retry requests after being rate-limited. Don’t unarchive cards if they receive new upvotes.
  • File Uploads: Fix issue when uploading psd files.
v2.42
28 Sep, 2020

Manual card order for decks & default orders

Within decks you’re now able to select a sort order called “Manual”. This allows you to drag cards around to give them an order that makes sense to you. This order is shared within your team and affects also open decks.

To make things easier for your team, you can also pick a default order option for a deck, be it the manual order, grouping by milestone or any other order option we’re offering. This allows you to guide both team members as well as visitors of open decks to see a deck in a way you’d prefer them to see it.

New drag and drop experience

The previous system was based on HTML native drag and drop events but it has proven difficult to work with and the drag and drop experience has become a frequent source of frustration with some of our users.

So we decided to rewrite the underlying architecture from scratch as there hasn’t been a good existing alternative solution out there for our various interaction patterns.

And to stick with our current theme of open development we open sourced the library here.

The result should be a much more stable experience across browsers and systems when dragging cards, decks, milestones and files around.

More improvements and fixes

  • When ordering by decks, swim lanes also show project names (if you have more than one project)
  • Ordering by projects now uses the order that you’ve set up via drag and drop
  • Fixed an issue when writing a comment was sometimes interrupted when a teammate archived another card in the same time.
  • Assignee history show more than one user again
  • Observers aren’t suggested as card owners anymore
v2.41
13 Sep, 2020

Open Decks

This release allows you to mark a project of yours as public. You can enter a path name and it’ll be visible for everyone under open.codecks.io/your-name. Go to your project settings to find the corresponding options. You have the option to hide comments for visitors. In any case, visitors will have read-only access only. The deck order for public projects is shared for all team members and can be modified by admins via drag and drop.
We’ve been in touch with some of you already and are excited to present some real-life examples soon! We’re also planning to set up an open development portal under open.codecks.io to allow people browsing Open Decks on Codecks.

  • To reference an already uploaded attachment: while editing, hit !. You now can pick an attachment.

Note that this also works for comments. This will make it a lot more straight forward to communicate about visual aspects of your projects!

Journeys are now in Beta!

After working and iterating for a few months, we believe Journeys are now ready to be released!

So what exactly are Journeys you ask? Well, Journeys allow you to define a set of recurring steps for your workflows. Once enabled, you can find a new button in your deck headers (Note: the icon is still based on the working title of this feature “Potion”, we’ll be updating it soon!).
With the new Journey view you’re able to define your Journey steps and assign default properties like owner, deck, effort, etc to them. Once your steps are ready, any card within this deck will have a Start Journey button. This will turn the card into a Hero card and create all the Journey’s steps as sub cards.

The Journey view also allows you to create a template card for the deck. This way every card created within this deck has some default properties and content to allow for more consistency. We’re also thinking of deprecating presets in favor of these template cards. So please let us know if there are some use cases we are missing!

As Journeys are still in beta you need to opt in. Go to your Organisation settings and check for the Hero cards & Journeys section at the bottom.

  • Editor: Fixed auto-complete behavior when putting a : behind a word.

  • Deck Inspector: Move deck description into a open-on-hover pill.
  • Markdown: Fix issue with symbols within link labels.
v2.33

Modern Emoji support 🪅🦤🪄

This releases features an upgrade from v4.0 to all of today’s sweetness from v13. Including proper support for skin tones, gendered and non-gendered Emojis, as well as the latest additions to the standard 🦦.

The new Emoji set is provided by Twitter’s (Twemoji)[https://twemoji.twitter.com/], so the look has changed a little.

We also had to update our editor’s Emoji picker (initiated by typing :). Instead of using short codes, we now rely on keywords to find relevant Emojis. This will provide more relevant results when typing :kiss for example.

More improvement and fixes:

Card URLs: a card’s title will now be part of a card’s URL. No worries, old URLs will still work and be redirected to their new form.
Card content: A card’s first line will automatically be styled as a heading if it contains no more than 60 characters.
Card content: improved styling for nested lists, fixed issue with successive card references.
Onboarding: new organizations get a more guided experience when setting up their first projects and decks.
Active conversations view: now considers the current project selection.
Image viewer: now also works for images in the activity stream and card history.
Preset picker: when opening the preset section, the preset selector will automatically be opened and additional space will be provided by scrolling down automatically.
Mini cards: clicking on a tag within a mini card won’t cause weird behavior.
Notifications: the “open all” toggle is now persisted (again).
Time Tracking: stop tracking when archiving a started card. Unarchiving a started card will now lead to a non-started state.

v2.32

  • Notifications: consider business days for the “snoozing conversation” notification. It’s now three business days rather than plain days based on the business days configured in the org settings.
  • Text Editor: You can now use the tab to auto-complete a suggestion. Esc now closes the auto-complete box rather than closing the editor.
  • Card creation: auto focus the editor field when opening the view
  • Card content: improved styling for numbered lists with checkboxes (i.e. 1. [] do this)
  • GitHub integration: fixed authentification issue
  • Discord integration: allow to set up multiple notifications commands for the same Codecks project
v2.31

v2.29
08 Apr, 2020

Nest your cards with Hero Cards

This release allows you to nest cards within each other. You can pick any card(s) and add them to another. While the sub cards behave pretty much like normal cards, the containing card turns into a Hero card. It’ll offer you a quick overview of the state of its sub cards. Its effort and status is inferred by the data of the sub cards.

This feature allows you to neatly group cards together. Even though sub cards might live in different decks and milestones the hero card allows you to check a feature’s status at a glance.

Right now the Hero card feature is in beta mode. This means you need to opt in: Go to your Organization settings and check the bottom area of the General section to enable it!

More improvements

  • Card creation: after creating a card, the created card will open automatically.
  • Content search: the content search now also searches for partial matches if the match is at the beginning of the word. I.e. searching for game will also return cards containing gameplay. Use quotes ("game") to perform an exact search.
  • Search: When your current view filters out cards (due to an active search or due to only showing hero cards), there’s a little hint showing you how many cards are filtered out.
v2.28
30 Mar, 2020

We’ve added a free plan!

Big news everyone! Teams with up to 3 users and up to 5 projects can now use Codecks for free! If you’re meeting the requirements, we’ve just put you on the free plan automatically. Feel free to upgrade if you want to benefit from the Pro plan (same cost as the previous paid plan):

  • unlimited users
  • unlimited projects
  • 5GB storage per user (instead of 1 GB total storage of the free plan)

We’re also introducing an Enterprise plan which comes with unlimited file storage, tailored onboarding and self-hosting support. Get in touch via hello@codecks.io to learn more about it.

This release features a remake of our billing section, so check it out within the organization settings.

Smaller fixes

  • Slack Integration: show up to 1000 channels (instead of only 100).
  • Faq: now references the faq on our homepage.

  • Deck milestone: when applying a milestone to a deck, it now correctly applies the milestone to all its cards.
  • Conversations: avoid auto-scrolling to the same conversation again and again after closing and opening the conversation in some situations.
  • Source control integrations: commit messages containing more than one line will be formatted correctly.
v2.26
02 Mar, 2020

New deck creation flow

When creating (or updating) a deck, you no longer need to drag or find a cover image from your machine. You now can either pick one of our default deck images, or enter the url of an image.

New order property: Creation Date

Allows you to group swim lanes by the card’s creation date. We also made the swim lanes for “Last updated” a bit more helpful when cards have been updated in a long time.

Improvement & Fixes

  • Deck & owner history: is now based on the last decks/owner that you have assigned rather than the most frequent within the last 30 days. This suggestions are now also more reliably updated as you use the app.
  • File uploads: when hitting size restrictions for files you’re now informed before uploading it all, rather than after the fact. (fyi: the limits for a single file are 10 MB for cover images, and 25 MB for card attachments, we’ll add it to our documentation soon!)
  • Drag to hand tab: Now also works from search result overview.
  • Time Tracking: Sometimes the timer would seem to continue when stopping work on a card. This should now no longer happen.
  • Reordering Decks: Should now be much smoother!
  • Order by status: Done cards that are archived, now are part of the “done” column.
  • Notification Panel: Fixed a crash that caused a 💥 for some folks.
v2.25
05 Feb, 2020
  • Search: Allow to inspect all available commands via an expand button.
  • Search: When searching within a deck, milestone or a deck, a button now allows to quickly perform the search in the full library.
  • Card history: Some design refinements after a long time without any updates
  • Archiving cards: Archiving a card now doesn’t automatically close it.

Fixes:

  • Drag and drop: rewrote our drag and drop library from scratch, to ensure more stable behavior.
  • Card content: Checkboxes (via - [] label) now should work more reliably.
  • User tags: guests now can delete user tags again (via their profile page).
  • Safari: A lot of design issues have been fixed.
  • …and a lot more

…and probably also relevant: this release contains a first prototype with a new workflow feature. For now it’s only enabled internally so we can test it extensively. We are now able to iterate under real-live conditions and should be ready to release it to the public in a few weeks!

v2.24
22 Jan, 2020

Reworked image thumbnail service

Images are everywhere on Codecks. This ranges from deck covers and avatars to attached images on cards.
So far we relied on a third-party service to create on-the-fly thumbnails of both static and animated images.
This version however introduces a solution provided and hosted by ourselves. Not only do we consider this beneficial for privacy reasons but this also means that there’s one less external dependency should we at some point offer a self-hosted version of Codecks.

We tested our new solution extensively (especially with animated gifs of course 😅) and think we’re in a good shape. Should you still encounter any issues with any images, please let us know!

Smaller fixes:

  • Deck Picker: Clicking on the deck tiles works again.
  • Conversation Overview: Clicking on the attachment icon or a conversation hint won’t crash anymore.
v2.23
17 Jan, 2020

Hotfix: Allow to delete decks which contain archived or deleted cards again.

v2.22
09 Jan, 2020

Discord integration improvements

  • Even if you set the reaction threshold for creating cards to 0, Decky will add a specified reaction. For commands without a configured reaction, it’ll default to the reaction.
  • Allow leaderboards for commands with a threshold of 0.
  • Spread leaderboards over several messages if it grows too large for a single message. (If you’ve missed Decky posting a leaderboard, that issue was probably the reason why.)
  • When creating a leaderboard, Decky checks whether any changes have happened compared to the last leaderboard. If that wasn’t the case it’ll still repost that leaderboard if someone else has posted in the channel in the meantime.

Smaller fixes

  • Some data like blocked card counts did not get updated without a refresh.
  • Clicking on an invitation link whose invitation got revoked, no longer leads to a crash.
  • Only show “Add your first Deck” label, if it’s actually going to be the first deck within a project.
v2.21
08 Jan, 2020

Search update

Our internal search system has been completely rewritten. It doesn’t look too different from the outside but comes with quite a few benefits for you:

  • Performance: Instead of loading all relevant cards into the browser and performing the search on your machine, the filtering now happens directly in the database, leading to much less data that needs to be exchanged.
  • Completeness: Includes all cards in search even when the current scope contains more than 3000 cards.
  • Card references: When searching for cards when typing $[card title] in the editor, it’ll search for all cards not just a subset of 3000 cards.
  • Search: When entering multiple values of the same category, i.e. multiple owners, it now performs an ‘or’ search rather than and ‘and’ search within that category.
  • Search: Include search options for No owner, No milestone, No deck and No project
  • Swim lanes: Clicking on a swim lane label will add a search filter for the lane, so you can drill down further

More improvements

  • Fresh look: A lot of pages received a visual overhaul: login page, media library, user management, user profile, password-reset, project tag management and a lot of components containing a form. A lot of smaller interactions were improved as well, like e.g. the feedback when updating a card’s property.
  • Card editing: The dropdown showing suggestions for e.g. mentions can now be clicked (or tapped on mobile)
  • Card editing: When editing a card and closing the edit form, it immediately shows the warning about non-saved content again
  • Card editing: Fixed an issue with the encoding of some links
  • Mobile: Editing cards and writing comments now works on mobile again (with full @mention, #tag and \$references support)
  • Fix: Some passwords created in the past month weren’t recognized when trying to log in
  • Fix: Some users that were added to an organization recently didn’t update the subscription user count
